Principles of Animation

For this week’s assignment I rewatched My neighbor Totoro, and noted a couple of animation rules used in the animated film. One of the scenes that caught my attention and made me relate to one of the principles of animation was the scene with Mai and Totoro in the forest. As Mai lays on top of Totoro’s big belly, he seems to be half awake as he continues to inhale and exhale. All of a sudden he opens his eyes and starts to open and close his mouth to insinuate his yawn is about to happen. He then yawns and his breath nearly blows Mai away but she is able to hold on to him. This shows the Pose to Pose principle in where the audience can tell he is about to yawn with his action and it is clear what will happen next.
